NAT contracts Alstom, Hyundai Rotem to supply 64 trains for third metro line
NAT invites experienced Japanese companies to prequalify for construction of phase 1 of fourth line

The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has decided to award the tender contract for 64 trains in phase three and four of the third line of the Greater Cairo metro to French Alstom Company and Hyundai Rotem. According to an official of the NAT, the authority has officially contracted with the two companies in the past week.
The NAT also invited Japanese contractors and any Japanese and Egyptian joint venture to prequalify for the construction of phase one of the fourth line of Greater Cairo metro with a length of 19 km from 6th of October City to the Grand Egyptian Museum, then to Remaya Square, along Haram street, to Giza Square, before crossing under the Nile to Manial island, El-Malek El-Salah station, and ending in El-Fustat station.
According to a source in the NAT, the project includes implementing the power supply system, the third rail contact power distribution system, signalling and automatic train control, the telecommunication system (including MSN, telephone, radio, wireless transform system of rolling stock, and CCTV) as well as the centralised control system including the automatic fair collection (FAC).
The NAT had assigned the supply and installation of the FAC of phase three of the third line to the French Thales Group.
The NAT had assigned implementation of rail work for the third metro line to the ETF-ORC-TSO alliance. This came after the NAT accepted the financial bid submitted by the association over that of French company Colas Rail.
The NAT's plan is to implement six new metro lines by 2032 to link Greater Cairo with all its suburbs.
The Greater Cairo metro receives more than 4 million passengers a day on the first line (Helwan-Marg) and the second line (Munib-Shubra), as well as the completed stations of the third line.
