CAIRO: Former Egypt coach Mahmoud Al-Gohari believes the Pharaohs are well capable of reaching the Confederations Cup semis. Egypt were drawn along with world champions Italy, Copa America winners Brazil and the United States in Group B of the tournament. The African champions will have to spring a surprise if they are to make it beyond the group stage in their second Confederation Cup appearance. Egypt will occupy one of the first two spots in their group. Their displays in recent years have been impressive, Al-Gohari told Arab Radio and Television (ART). The national team will be largely helped by their foreign-based players, who are doing very well. Although Al-Gohari is quite confident that Egypt can overcome any opponent, he is aware that Group B will present a stern test for them. It is a very tough group. Italy are the reigning world champions while Brazil s free-flowing football always confuses opponents. The US are also difficult to beat. Their players are characterized by their high fitness. Al-Gohari is considered one of the finest coaches in Egypt s history. He was in charge of Egypt when they made their Confederations Cup debut in 1999. Egypt campaign in Mexico was a disappointing one as they finished bottom of their group to suffer an early exit.
