Qasr Al-Nil Midemenours Court on Tuesday handed Ayman Maher a one-month sentence with a bail of EGP 100 and an EGP 50 fine. The Revolutionary Front and Misr Al-Qawia member was arrested earlier this month in the downtown Cairo district of Abdeen while distributing flyers about the upcoming second anniversary of the clashes on Mohamed Mahmoud Street. The court found Maher guilty of "possession of seditious publications against the police and the army" in his second hearing. Maher had been detained for four days pending investigation, and was renewed an additional 15 days following preliminary investigations. According to the Association for the Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE), Maher's sentence was handed down in accordance with Article 98 of the Penal Code, which prohibits the distribution of certain publications. The flyer that had been distributed by Maher was issued by the Revolutionary Front and called for the purging of the Ministry of Interior of "killers and the corrupt" to "ensure the end of their crimes." The statement also called for the trials of past and current leadership of the interior ministry, including current Minister of the Interior Mohamed Ibrahim.
