Abdeen Misdemeanors Court yesterday sentenced Ahmed Saad Douma, an activist from the 6 April movement, to six months in jail for assaulting a police officer during protests on 3 May. Douma was also ordered to pay bail of LE300 to suspend the sentence. The suspect arrived at court surrounded by heavy security. Many activists were waiting for him and chanting political slogans. Giving testimony, Colonel Hisham Lotfi said: "More than 200 activists from opposition groups gathered on Monday, 3 May, at the garden in front of Omar Makram Mosque. Women distributed flowers among security services, so men would be able to complete their protest. I suddenly found the suspect taking a stick from inside a kiosk and injuring a security officer. The suspect was then arrested and a report was filed." Hani Guirguis, a Qasr el-Nil police officer, corroborated the story. First Lieutenant Ahmed Hassan, the injured officer, said the suspect had beaten him and prevented him from leaving the cordon, which had led to his arm being broken.
