CAIRO: Minister of Health Hatem El-Gabaly banned the opening of Ramadan tents this year to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported. During Ramadan, hotels and restaurants set up nightly tents where they serve sohour and provide entertainment. El-Gabaly told MENA on Tuesday during a celebration in the Alexandria Dental Center that having around 700 people in one place raises the risk of catching the virus. However, the ministry's press office told Daily News Egypt they are yet to officially announce the decision in a statement, but it could be among a number of precautionary measures the ministry will take in the upcoming period. However, hotels and restaurants contacted by Daily News Egypt said they are still going ahead with their plans for Ramadan tents. Sangria Garden Ramadan Tent is scheduled to open on the eve of Ramadan on Aug. 21. "We haven't heard anything from the ministry or from health officials nor did we receive any warnings that there might be a decree prohibiting tents this year, said Mohamed Saad, Sangria Garden manager. JW Marriott Mirage is getting ready to open its annual Layaly Mirage, or Mirage Nights, Ramadan tent. The public relations office there also said that they haven't received any orders from the ministry. The Moroccan tent which is set up every year at the First Mall is also ready to start operating next weekend.
