CAIRO: An Egyptian misdemeanor court in Sohag sentenced Coptic Christian teacher Bishoy Kameel to 6 years in jail for publishing anti-Islam pictures on his Facebook account, defaming the president and insulting the prosecutor. He received three years for the first account, two years for the second and one year for the last. The defendant's lawyer is appealing and a different court will look into the case later this month. Kameel was sued by an agriculture engineer who accused him of publishing and sharing insulting pictures and drawings of Islam and insulting and defaming Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi on his Facebook account and the general prosecutor began an investigation after the complaint was filed. The trial saw a heavy presence of Salafist Egyptians, or Islamic Puritans, who held signs calling for a vendetta against the defendant. An eyewitness report mentioned that their anger towards Kameel continued after the sentence was announced as they hurled rocks at the transport vehicle as Kameel was taken to prison. They also chanted religious slogans. On August 1, a group of ultra-conservative men tried to attack Kameel, as shown here on this video.
