CAIRO: Gunmen in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula shot and killed a tribal leader and his son near the border with Israel, security sources were quoted as saying by Reuters news agency on Monday morning. It comes as Egypt continues it largest military operation in Sinai following the August 5 attack on a border crossing that left 16 Egyptian soldiers dead and 7 others wounded. “Tribal leader Khalaf Al-Menahy and his son were shot dead by militants on their way back from a conference organized by tribal leaders to denounce militancy,” said the security source in Sinai. Egypt has been on high alert since Sunday's attack, which ousted intelligence officials said they had had detailed information of the plot days in advance but failed to act upon the information, saying they did not believe Muslims would kill Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.
