KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia police in Melaka have intervened to care for some 30 dogs who had been left alone after their adult companion was charged with murder. According to a police statement, published by Malaysia's The Star newspaper, police officers are taking turns visiting, feeding and playing with the animals daily while investigations and a potential trial take place in the southern Malaysian city. Police, however, have called on animal welfare groups and animal lovers to assist in their attempt to care for the animals and ultimately, find new homes for the dogs. State deputy Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Superintendent R Gunarajan said the dogs had been roaming around the suspect's house since the man was detained last Monday. He said: “We don't know what to do, but we feel very sorry for the dogs which are attacking each other due to hunger. The house compound is smeared with their blood.” Three officers have been officially given assignment to care for the dogs until they are with new homes, the police superintendent said. He added the dogs are suffering from skin diseases and most of them look scrawny due to lack of food. “I don't know how long the dogs had been left starving, but we are having sleepless nights worrying about them,” he continued. “We hope the dogs are given proper shelter and food soon.”
