Egyptian activists reported being attacked by rubber bullets and homemade bombs during their protest outside the ministry of defense headquarters in Cairo on Sunday. The activists said “thugs” have continued to attack them with Molotov cocktails, knives and rubber bullets, injuring tens of protesters. The recent Sunday attack comes less than a day after the protesters were attacked late on Saturday by unknown groups of “thugs” and the violent attack left dozens injured continued to the early hours of Sunday. Protesters reported that the security forces guarding the ministry saw the bloody attacks and refused to move, and considered them complicit in the violence. Some activists went on to say that the attackers are security forces in plainclothes. News website Youm al-Saba'a reported that 47 protesters were injured during the attacks, citing a source inside a makeshift hospital that was erected to treat the injured. They quoted the doctor saying that 35 protesters were hit by rubber bullets, including one man hit in the left eye. Other injuries were caused by broken glass and sharp objects. The protestors, who marched towards the ministry late on Friday, are calling for the dissolving of the presidential election committee and the adjustment of article 28 of the constitutional declaration that says the decisions of the committee are final. Online activists shared photos of men firing what looks like homemade guns towards the protesters. The “We are all Khaled Said” Facebook page published a series of photos of “thugs” attacking and firing guns at protesters and called for their arrest. Activists dismissed reports that the residents of Abbassiya were behind the attack, adding that many of them have joined in to protect them against the attacks and show their support.
