NEW DELHI: An eight-year old boy was sexually abused by a group of six youngsters, also minors, for over a week, even filming the rape and circulating it to their friends via a multimedia texts. The six youngsters among whom, five are below 18, have been taken into custody by the police. The incident comes barely a day after the Union government of India approved a bill that will make sexual offenses against all those who are below 18 a strictly punishable offense. The incident took place in the city of Chandigarh, in Northern India. The incident also came just a week after another 8-year old was allegedly sodomized and later killed in Jalandhar in the nearby state of Punjab a 16 year old student. The newly developed areas around Delhi located in the States of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh have seen an increase of crime, especially sexual offences against women and children. These hitherto rural farmland areas have suddenly become rich owing to the expansion of Delhi as well as in some cases benefiting from the green revolution, which gave a huge boost to agriculture in the region as well as brought rich dividends to farmers of the region. Inefficient policing has only contributed to the number of crimes in the region, with very often the offenders going scot free, either because they are never found, or on account of poor investigations by the police, which results in acquittals by the courts.
