NEW DELHI: A fourteen year old girl is fighting for life after her rapist, doused her with kerosene and set her on fire on Wednesday, in one of India's most notorious state's Uttar Pradesh, which is associated with lawlessness. The UP police are now on the lookout for Sonu Tewari, who has been accused of the rape. Eyewitnesses said that the girl was alone in her house at Basantpur, Barabanki, located on the outskirts of UP's capital Lucknow, when Sonu raped her. The rapist however poured kerosene on the girl and set her on fire after the victim raised an alarm. The victim has been admitted to hospital with 80 per cent burns and health authorities claim that chances of her survival are minimal. The police is on the lookout for Sonu. UP is one of India's most lawless provinces. Improving law and order and minimizing sexual assaults against women were two of the main poll planks of the Samajwadi Party, which won the recently concluded state assembly polls. Mulayam Singh Yadav, who had founded the party more than two decades ago, even promised government jobs to rape victims during the election campaign, but was forced to retract his statement after popular outcry, which claimed in unison that not enough was being done to control the grim law and order situation in the state.
