LAGOS: It has been revealed by the Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed that Ghana will have a space center by May this year. According to him, Ghana is collaborating with South Africa, United States and Nigeria in the establishment of the space station. This announcement was made at the second edition of “The Mathelete”, an inter-tertiary mathematics competition held at the Meagasa Mathematics Academy in Accra. The center will be located at Kuntenase in the Eastern Region and will be run by the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. In the competition, six tertiary institutions presented solutions to some social, environmental, health and security problems using mathematical equations. The was organized by the Ghana Mathematics Society in collaboration with Dream Weavers Consult. The competing institutions included the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Ghana (UG), University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Cape Coast (UCC), All Nations University and Accra Polytechnic. According to Professor Sitsofe Anku, the principles and methods of solving problems come from mathematics as it ensures efficiency in ICT and technology. But, sadly, stakeholders and policy makers ignore math as a solution to the problems Ghana is facing.
