Kabul (dpa) – A gunman wearing the Afghan National Army uniform shot dead two soldiers from the NATO-led international force in the south of the country on Monday, the alliance said. The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement that “an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against ISAF service members,” killing two of them. “The individual who opened fire was killed when coalition forces returned fire,” it said, without disclosing details of the victims or the location of the incident. The incident took place early Monday in Lashkargah, the provincial capital of the southern province of Helmand, where US and British soldiers are stationed, the provincial governor spokesman said. Daud Ahmadi said that there had been a clash between foreign troops and Afghan military personnel, resulting into deaths of two foreign soldiers and one Afghan army soldier. “We are investigating the incident right now,” he said. Last month, six US soldiers were shot and killed by gunmen in Afghan military uniform during a series of protests after US soldiers incinerated copies of the Qur'an. In February, an Afghan intelligence officer shot dead two US advisors to Afghanistan's Interior Ministry inside the ministry's heavily guarded compound.
