A 32-year-old Muslim woman, of Iraqi origins, was beaten to death in her California home, and next to her body a note that read “go home, you are a terrorist” was found. Haima Alawadi, a mother of five, was found by one of her daughters, Fatima Al Himidi, a 17-year-old girl, who called for help. Her daughter found her unconscious in their living room, in the suburbs of San Diego, on Wednesday. She was taken off of life support machines on Saturday. Alawadi's children range in age from 8 to 17. She left behind a grieving husband, two sons and three daughters. Police, who were cautious at first, saying it might have been an “isolated incident,” are now investigating it as a hate crime. The woman, who wears the hijab, or headscarf, is believed to have been targeted for her religion and origin. The daughter told KUSI TV that her mother was “beaten on the head repeatedly with a tire iron” and that she found the note saying “go back to your country, you terrorist” next to her. “You took my mother away from me. You took my best friend away from me. Why? Why did you do it?” said the devastated 17-year-old. Police said similar notes were sent to the family home earlier this month, but they dismissed it as a “prank” and did not alert the authorities.
