Kandahar, Afghanistan (dpa) – A roadside bomb struck a police vehicle on Saturday in southern Afghanistan, killing a former Afghan senator, two of his bodyguards and a tribal elder, a police spokesman said. The bomb went off as Hajji Khairullah Aka was en route to his house in Trinkot city, the provincial capital of Uruzgan. Police said an influential tribal elder of the province, Sharafudin Akhund, was also killed in the explosion. Afghan tribal elders close to President Hamid Karzai have been repeatedly targeted by Taliban militants as part of their bloody insurgency. The Taliban were not immediately available for comment.
