LAGOS: The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given phone manufacturers and distributors in Lagos a one-month ultimatum to get approval for their phones at the regulatory body's office or face serious sanctions. This is due to an emergency meeting between the NCC and Phone and Allied Products Dealers Association which compelled the NCC to give the association a month's grace to ensure their phones are type approved. The president of the Association, Mr. Ike Nwosu, expressed satisfaction that the NCC granted the phone manufacturers a window to do the right thing rather than continuing with the clampdown. The action was necessary because of the massive clamp down by the enforcement unit of the NCC on manufacturers of unapproved phones at the Computer Village in Lagos. The NCC is required to approve mobile telephones and any other telecoms equipment before they can be sold and used in Nigeria. The NCC as a result, sealed the service station of Tecno Mobile, a Chinese phone maker and other unapproved mobile phone service centers at the Computer Village. The action became necessary due to the fact that some of its mobile phones flooding the Nigerian market were still unapproved. Reuben Mouka, the Head, Media and Publicity, NCC, said the commission would continue the fight until every phone imported into the country had been approved.
