LAGOS: In a continuation of threats to telecom operators, the Nigerian telecom regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has threatened to fine a subsidiary of an Indian firm, Airtel Nigeria, and two other companies, if they fail to improve the quality of their mobile services. In addition to the fine, NCC will prevent companies will from registering new subscribers if they do not improve their network quality. The companies would pay a fine of $6,216 per subscriber if the sanctions take effect. The NCC said the move comes as a bid to improve quality of telephone service in Nigeria. The NCC will use equipment to monitor whether customers are able to make and receive calls, as well as the quality of the calls. BM
