Istanbul – (dpa) An Istanbul court has awarded compensation to an employee of an international fast food chain, after he was sacked for declining to eat their hamburgers, the Turkish daily Bugun reported on Monday. The report, which referred to “hamburger torture,” named the employee as Eyup Kaya, who brought the case four years ago after being dismissed for not eating the free hamburgers he was given for lunch. The court accepted Kaya's arguments that it he had told the chain that he was unable to eat greasy food as it made him ill, and that it was unfair for employers to expect their staff to eat exactly the same food every lunchtime. Kaya, who had worked for the chain for three years, was awarded 5,600 lire (3,100 dollars) in compensation. “Forcing staff to eat the same thing for lunch every day for years is a breach of human rights,” said Kaya. “I hope this ruling will help the tens of thousands of people working in the fast food sector in Turkey,” he added.
