LAGOS: The Federal Government has revealed that it is doubling its efforts to combat cybercrimes in the country even as telecoms operators warn subscribers of fraudsters. This was disclosed at a one day conference on Regulatory Imperative for Cybercrime and Cyber Security in Nigeria. At the conference, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Engr Eugene Juwah said given the high level of cybercrime in the country, the agency has set up a new department that would tackle the challenge. The EVC who was represented by the Executive Commissioner, Hon. Okechukwu Itanyi said: “Cyber criminals are ever present menace in every country connected to the internet, and as such, the NCC has created a line new department called New Media and Information Security in line with global trend in the fight against cybercrime.” Omobola Johnson, the Minister of Communication Technology warned, “Cyber criminals are already exploiting vulnerabilities and loopholes in national and regional legislation, there is evidence that they are shifting their methods. Diverse operations to countries where appropriate and enforcement laws are not yet in place.” She further explained, “No country is safe from cybercrime, where it has become an organized syndicate reaping financial rewards and using tools to threaten different platform in various countries.” The Committee on Communication has assured Nigerians that in the coming months they will expedite action on the bill on cybercrime which has passed the second reading.
