CAIRO: Egypt's newly appointed Prime Minister Kamal Ganzouri denied responsibility for ongoing clashes between soldiers and protesters in downtown Cairo, at a press conference on Saturday. He accused “unknown people” and “foreign elements” of inciting the riots, and said that military police had acted in defense and exercised self-control in dealing with the protesters. He called his government “the revolution's salvation government,” denying media reports that the army had used live ammunition on protesters. “I emphasize that military forces did not clash with them, and only guarded the parliament and cabinet building,” he said at the press conference. He said that those who have occupied the Cabinet building are not the youth of the revolution. “Those who carry out these acts are not revolutionaries and do not want the best for Egypt,” he continued. Official state estimates have set the death toll at nine, with 354 protesters injured in the ongoing violence. According to eyewitness reports, the army has moved into Qasr al-Aini Street in downtown Cairo to construct a concrete barrier in front of the Cabinet building.
