CAIRO: Football so often brings out the violence in Egypt, with clashes become commonplace in the country since last year's Algeria clash left store fronts across Cairo smashed and destroyed. Now, an Egyptian judge ordered 11 Tunisians jailed on Tuesday after they were accused of attacking police and damaging property following a match in Cairo over the weekend. Judicial sources told Bikya Masr that it is not known how long they are to be detained. The violence allegedly occurred following Egypt club al-Ahly's victory over Tunisia's Esperance 2-1 in Cairo. The outburst of violence happened at the end of Sunday's match, police said. Security had already been in place to prevent fans from rioting, but 11 policemen allegedly were hospitalized after clashes with Tunisian fans broke out. Images on Egyptian television showed a mob of angry Tunisian fans beating riot police, vandalizing the stadium by ripping out chairs and throwing fireworks into the pitch at Cairo Stadium. The two club teams will meat again on October 16 in the second leg of the African Champions League semi-finals. BM
