Egypt's National Railways Authority reported a 17.5 percent increase in revenues to reach 304.9 million Egyptian pounds ($16.6 million) during the last two months. Earlier, the revenues stood at 259.4 million pounds during the same period in 2016. Revenues rose 11.2 percent to 140.8 million pounds during February, compared with 126.6 million pounds during the same month in 2016, the country's state-run statistics agency CAPMAS said Wednesday in its latest bulletin. "The revenues jumped to 164.1 million pounds during last January, compared to 132.8 million pounds during the same period in 2016," the bulletin showed. The number of railways passengers increased 11.3 percent, to 41.4 million during January and February 2017, against 37.2 million during the same two months in 2016, CAPMAS stated. In February, the number of passengers climbed 9.1 percent to 20.3 million, from 18.6 million passengers during the same period a year earlier. In January, the number hit 21.1 million from 18.6 million passengers during January 2016. The quantity of goods transferred in the railways fell 1.7 percent to 836,500 tonnes in January and February 2017 from 850,700 tonnes during the same months in 2016.
