Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) plans to build integrated industrial clusters for green fuel production and bunkering as part of the country's national hydrogen strategy, its chairman said on Thursday. Speaking at a panel on Africa's hydrogen development strategy during the TICAD 9 summit in Yokohama, Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien said the zone's position on global trade routes made it a natural gateway for exports. He highlighted SCZONE's export of the world's first green ammonia shipment in November 2023 and the Sokhna hydrogen plant's successful trial in July 2024, which secured a €397 million contract under Germany's H2Global scheme to supply 72,000 tons of renewable ammonia to the EU from 2027. SCZONE ports also handled the world's first green fuel-powered vessel in August 2023, which Gamal El-Dien said underscored Egypt's capacity to attract investment and localise hydrogen industries.
