Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development Rania Al-Mashat stressed the need for robust governance frameworks to ensure that artificial intelligence and digital technologies serve people fairly and sustainably. She said AI has become a key driver in tackling complex development challenges and reshaping growth models, according to the Cabinet's statement on Thursday. Her remarks came during a session organised by the United Nations University (UNU) at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), under the theme "Governance in the Digital Age: Lessons for Africa." Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt's role in sharing its expertise with African nations, advancing responsible AI governance, and promoting South-South and triangular cooperation. She said Egypt played a leading role in drafting the African Continental AI Strategy, launched in August 2024, which focuses on ethical and sustainable governance. The country also represents North Africa on the AU Advisory Group on Artificial Intelligence and its impact on peace, security and governance. She said Africa has a unique chance to leverage AI for inclusive and sustainable development, with more than 60 per cent of its population under 25 and a digital economy expected to add $180 billion to the continent's GDP. Al-Mashat pointed to presidential directives for clear strategies to harness AI and strengthen research and development. She said the government has taken pioneering steps in AI governance and capacity-building, while also supporting start-ups to empower innovators and entrepreneurs in deploying emerging technologies across vital sectors.
