Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly held a high-level meeting Tuesday to follow up on President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directive to establish a global logistics centre for grain storage and trade in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE). The envisioned hub aims to position Egypt as a central player in global grain supply chains. It will feature advanced storage facilities, including silos and logistics platforms, and will serve regional and international markets, particularly in Africa. "The SCZONE offers strong logistical capabilities and solid trade partnerships across Africa," Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said during the meeting, according to a Cabinet statement. "President El-Sisi has directed us to prepare a compelling investment prospectus that highlights the competitive advantages and expected returns of this global hub, capitalising on Egypt's strategic location as a key grain corridor." The meeting brought together key ministers and senior officials, including the ministers of finance, supply, agriculture, and planning, as well as representatives from the SCZONE and the Future of Egypt Sustainable Development Authority. Discussions focused on accelerating feasibility studies and investment promotion strategies. Supply Minister Sherif Farouk noted that Egypt already has substantial storage capacity in place and land available for expansion. Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk added that the centre will also host complementary activities, including food processing and export services. Officials stressed the importance of preparing a robust investment file highlighting the zone's logistical advantages, infrastructure readiness, and potential returns for investors. A dedicated task force has been formed to finalise technical studies and engage international partners, the statement added. The initiative comes amid increasing global food security concerns and continued disruptions to trade routes. Egypt, one of the world's largest wheat importers, has stepped up efforts in recent years to bolster domestic storage and reduce supply chain vulnerabilities. The SCZONE is already attracting strong interest from international investors, especially in the logistics and industrial sectors. Authorities say the grain hub could further cement Egypt's role as a regional trade and distribution gateway. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English
