Egypt has approved a package of new measures aimed at supporting the expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) industry, including the adoption of European technical standards for imports and domestic production, the Cabinet said Monday. The steps are part of Egypt's broader green transition strategy and were reviewed during a meeting of the Ministerial Group for Industrial Development, chaired by Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir. The government aims to accelerate the rollout of EV charging stations across the country to encourage uptake among consumers and investors. Authorities are also working on a pricing structure for charging services based on consumption patterns across different EV categories. The group said vehicles using uncertified Chinese chargers would be barred from the market due to safety concerns. Minister El-Wazir called for coordination between the ministries of finance and investment to establish clear regulatory and customs policies for EV imports. The proposed framework would balance support for local manufacturing with protections against unfair competition. The government also plans to strengthen the Egyptian Organisation for Standardisation and Quality (EOS) to ensure EVs and related equipment meet technical and safety requirements.
