Egypt's General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) on Tuesday witnessed the signing of an expansion contract for the Nile Plastic Recycling Company project, located within the Main Development Company's (MDC) area in the Sokhna Integrated Industrial Zone. The $15 million expansion will add a new 10,000-square-metre facility dedicated to recycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the key raw material used in food-grade plastic packaging. The plant is expected to process 20,000 tons of plastic waste annually and create 500 new direct jobs. Around 70 per cent of its output will be exported, while 30 per cent will serve the local market. This second phase follows an initial $20 million investment signed in November 2024 to establish a facility for turning PET bottles into recycled PET (rPET). The first phase, built over 12,000 square metres, is due to begin operations in the first half of 2026. SCZONE said the expansion reflects growing investor confidence in Egypt's industrial investment climate. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English Subediting: M. S. Salama
