Egypt was the world's seventh-largest recipient of remittances in 2024, attracting $22.7 billion in inflows, behind India, Mexico, China and the Philippines, World Bank data showed. Remittances to Egypt rose from $27.8 billion in 2019/20 to a record $31.9 billion in 2021/22, boosted by pandemic and geopolitical factors, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said on Monday. But inflows fell to $22.1 billion in 2022/23 and $21.9 billion in 2023/24, pressured by labour market shifts, currency market distortions, global inflation and slower Gulf growth. Remittances rebounded sharply in early 2025, surging 84.4% year-on-year in the first quarter to $8.33 billion, after foreign exchange unification reforms helped stabilise currency markets and attract inflows, according to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).
