Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty praised the progress in ties with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and called for deeper cooperation in key sectors. He said Egypt would work through its development agency and the Cairo conflict resolution centre. He announced plans to set up a cardiac surgery unit at Kinshasa General Hospital. It will be equipped and staffed by Egyptian doctors to train local teams. These remarks came during Abdel-Aty's meeting with DR Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Wagner on the sidelines of the Africa-Europe ministerial meeting on Wednesday in Brussels. He welcomed the April 25 Declaration of Principles signed by DR Congo and Rwanda in Washington. The Egyptian FM voiced Egypt's support for mediation efforts to ease tensions and offered to help restore trust and stability. Abdel-Aty also stressed Egypt's support for Nile Basin development. He referred to a new $100 million fund for infrastructure in southern basin states.
