Egypt is betting on artificial intelligence (AI) to overhaul its tax administration, with officials saying the technology will play a key role in simplifying procedures and improving taxpayer services. Khaled Abdel Ghani, chairman of state-backed eTax Company, said efforts are underway to leverage AI and electronic data systems to boost the efficiency and speed of tax processes. The move comes as part of a wider digital transformation aimed at strengthening trust with the private sector. The focus is on using AI to provide real, tangible returns for taxpayers, Abdel Ghani said. "The goal is "to facilitate the tax community, considering that it offers the best return for taxpayers from the applied automated systems." The strategy complements the Ministry of Finance's recently launched tax relief package, which includes streamlined procedures and simplified systems targeting small and medium-sized enterprises. Abdel Ghani said technical support at tax offices remains a critical component for ensuring system stability and user satisfaction. Egypt has been expanding its digital capabilities in tax administration over the past several years, including e-invoicing, e-receipts, and taxpayer portals, in a bid to increase compliance, reduce bureaucracy, and modernise public finance management.
