Egypt, Iraq stress need to implement Gaza ceasefire agreement
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 25 - 02 - 2025

Egypt and Iraq have reaffirmed the importance of implementing the Gaza ceasefire agreement in all its phases. They also emphasised the need to exchange prisoners and detainees and to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave.
During a meeting in Cairo on Tuesday, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Ammar Al-Hakim, head of Iraq's National Wisdom Movement, underscored the necessity of early recovery efforts and the reconstruction of Gaza without displacing its Palestinian residents. They rejected any proposals for forced displacement, stressing that such actions would undermine the Palestinian Cause and threaten regional security. Both sides reiterated the need to establish a Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as the only path to lasting peace.
President Sisi also highlighted the importance of Iraq's security and stability. He affirmed Egypt's readiness to provide all necessary support to advance Iraq's development and meet the aspirations of its people.
Situation in Syria
The talks also covered developments in Syria. Both leaders stressed the need to preserve Syria's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. They called for an inclusive political process leading to a new constitution and elections, while also urging an end to the occupation of Syrian territories. The meeting further addressed regional developments, with both sides emphasising the importance of continued efforts to restore stability and prevent escalation. They warned that any regional conflict would have severe repercussions for all countries and their populations.
Al-Hakim expressed his appreciation for the historic ties between Egypt and Iraq. He commended Egypt's leadership in maintaining regional security and stability and acknowledged its ongoing support for Iraq across various sectors.
