Egypt, Sudan reject external interference
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 24 - 02 - 2025

Egypt and Sudan reaffirmed that resolving Sudan's crisis is a sovereign right of the Sudanese people, rejecting any external interference. The two countries also stressed the importance of ending the ongoing conflict in Sudan, preserving its territorial integrity, and respecting its sovereignty and national institutions, including the armed forces.
In a joint communique issued following the political consultation meetings between the Egyptian and Sudanese foreign ministries in Cairo on Sunday, February 23, 2025, the two sides underscored their shared stance on key regional issues. The meetings were held at Egypt's invitation and chaired by the foreign ministers of both countries.
Sudan's Foreign Minister expressed deep appreciation for Egypt's continuous support for Sudan across various fields, as well as for hosting Sudanese citizens fleeing the conflict and providing them with necessary care. Egypt, in turn, commended Sudan's efforts in protecting civilians and engaging actively in international humanitarian initiatives.
Egypt also acknowledged Sudan's steps in facilitating humanitarian aid delivery, including the establishment of humanitarian warehouses, the operation of aid flights, and the opening of border crossings. Cairo reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside Sudanese institutions and international partners to support these humanitarian efforts.
Additionally, Egypt reiterated its full readiness to contribute to Sudan's reconstruction and welcomed Sudan's initiatives to mobilise regional and international support for rebuilding state institutions. The two countries agreed to establish a joint team to study international reconstruction experiences, enhancing their cooperation in this regard.
On economic cooperation, both sides welcomed joint projects, particularly in electricity and railway connectivity. Sudan expressed appreciation for Egypt's efforts in rehabilitating Wadi Halfa port, which is expected to boost river transport and facilitate trade and movement between the two nations.
Protecting full water rights
The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting their full water rights in accordance with existing agreements and international law. They stressed that Egyptian and Sudanese water security is indivisible and urged all parties to refrain from unilateral actions that could harm their shared water interests. Furthermore, they emphasised their commitment to working within the Nile Basin Initiative to restore consensus and cooperation among member states.
Regarding Red Sea security, the two sides underscored the importance of strengthening regional coordination and upholding security principles in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. They rejected any threats to maritime navigation in this vital waterway.
No to forced displacement of Palestinians
The discussions also covered broader regional issues, with both nations strongly opposing any forced displacement of the Palestinian people and reaffirming the need to preserve their legitimate rights. Sudan commended Egypt's diplomatic efforts in this regard.
On Syria and Lebanon, Egypt and Sudan agreed on the necessity of an inclusive political process in Syria that ensures its unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. They also welcomed the election of Joseph Aoun as Lebanon's president and the formation of a new Lebanese government, expressing their support for Lebanon's stability and territorial integrity.
