Road vehicles drive 70% of CO2 emissions- French envoy
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 08 - 05 - 2024

The transportation sector is responsible for 23 per cent of global energy-related CO2 emissions and 70 per cent of road vehicle emissions, said French Ambassador to Egypt, Eric Chevallier on Wednesday citing a recent report by IPCC.
Ambassador Chevallier made his remarks during the signing ceremony of a landmark partnership between Danone Egypt and Shift EV on Wednesday that marking their commitment to eco-friendly transportation.
The alliance, which aims to electrify nearly 50 per cent of Danone's distribution fleet, is seen as a significant step in the fight against climate change. This significant advancement will allow Danone to reduce its carbon emissions by over 6000 tons, while also cutting operating costs by 70 per cent.
Chevallier highlighted the collaboration as a prime example of how economic development and environmental protection can coexist.
The ambassador praised the initiative as a continuation of the efforts by France and Egypt, hosts of the pivotal climate conferences COP 21 in 2015 and COP 27 in 2022, to advance environmental causes. He also stressed the importance of the private sector's role in innovation and the implementation of sustainable practices.
With Shift EV's Electro-fitted technology, Danone Egypt is not only contributing to the decarbonisation of the transportation sector but also promoting recycling and a circular economy, the French ambassador noted.
The event also celebrated the rapid growth of Shift EV, which now employs over 120 people and has garnered interest from key investors, signaling a positive outlook for the future of green technology in Egypt.
