European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on Thursday called for Egyptian authorities to launch swift investigation into the Port Said clashes which left at least 71 people dead. “I hope an immediate and independent investigation will shed light on the causes of this tragic event,” Ashton said in a statement. “I have conveyed to the Egyptian authorities my deepest condolences to the people of Egypt for the tragic loss of so many lives at a football match in Port Said. My thoughts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones in this tragedy. I also wish the many injured a full and speedy recovery,” Ashton added. Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, said in a statement, “I entirely share the views expressed by High Representative Ashton in reaction to the events in Egypt.” “I was deeply saddened and shocked by the terrible scenes and loss of life witnessed in Port Said. My thoughts are also with those who have lost their loved ones and friends,” Vassiliou said. “As with all sports, football can give rise to intense passions, but the events we have seen at the stadium are completely unacceptable,” Vassiliou added.
