Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif has approved allocating LE50 million for the establishment of two new schools in the Sudanese city of Wau, the capital of the West Bahr al Ghazal State, and Ruhr city in southern Sudan. The two projects will be established in two years' time. These remarks were made by Minister of Education Yousri al-Gamal in his speech yesterday during the celebration of laying the foundation stone for the school compound being established by the Egyptian government as a gift for the Wau inhabitants. The celebration was attended by the Sudanese Vice President Salva Kiir and the Sudanese Minister of Education, Science and Technology of the Government of Southern Sudan.
Egypt has recently established new educational projects in Sudan worth LE25.5 million, including the establishment of Juba Industrial School in southern Sudan at a cost of LE7 million, the maintenance and rehabilitation of a school in Jebel Aulia at a cost of LE2 million, the maintenance of other 8 schools at the cost of LE10 million, and the equipment of the Egyptian mission's schools at a cost of LE6.5 million, al-Gamal added. Studies are underway for the establishment of the headquarters of the Egyptian educational mission in central Khartoum on 4200 square meters and at a cost of LE40 million.
The new schools in Wau are established by the Arab Contractors, which establishes a primary and preparatory school, an industrial secondary school and an agricultural secondary school. Every school has 15 classrooms, a library, a laboratory, three rooms for teachers and the administration, workshops and a boarding school. On the other hand, Kiir, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis and a number of officials in the two countries have inaugurated a power grid in Wau. This comes within the cooperation with the Government of Southern Sudan in the field of electricity within the framework of the Egyptian LE158-million grant to Sudan to implement a number of electricity projects Egypt pledged to complete in the southern Sudan. The electricity sector committed to implementing these projects on the ground. The project provides electricity for the city's inhabitants, contributes to the establishment of development projects in Wau, creates job opportunities in southern Sudan and develops training programs for them inside and outside Sudan in the areas of the operation and maintenance of generators and grids. In addition, the project contributed to supporting and promoting the work of the Egyptian and Sudanese companies in the field of construction, installation and consultation services.
The project included the supply, installation and operation of a power plant with a capacity of 2 MW, in addition to the establishment of the electricity distribution networks of low and medium voltage to supply the city with electricity, Younis said, pointing out that the investment cost of the project amounted to LE44 million within the framework of the Egyptian grant for the reconstruction of southern Sudan.
The electricity grids, which were implemented in Wau, include 19 distribution transformers with a capacity of 1900 KVA, in addition to electrical networks with a total length of 100 kilometers.
An Egyptian company working in this area provided the consulting services and supervised the power station and the affiliated networks. In addition, it supplied, installed and operated the project's equipment. Another three power stations are being established in Port Sudan Rumbek, and Bambio with a total capacity of some 8 MW and an investment cost of LE114 million. The three stations' equipment has been shipped and the process of installation will start in two months, minister Younis said.
