Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abul-Gheit and Head of Egyptian Intelligence General Omar Suleiman will visit the Sudanese capital of Khartoum tomorrow for talks with the Sudanese officials on the latest developments in the Sudanese arena. An Egyptian diplomatic source said: "The current period needs unceasing consultation between the two sisterly countries." The visit comes amid much controversy and talk in the international community about an imminent decision by the International Criminal Court on detaining the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of committing war crimes in the Darfur region.
The source pointed out that there is ongoing consultation and coordination between Egypt and Sudan.
In the same context, Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis and Minister of Education Yousri al-Gamal will pay a visit today to Sudan to inaugurate the power station established by Egypt in Wau, a town in southern Sudan on the western bank of the Jur River, and to lay the foundation stone of a school compound.
The Egyptian ambassador in Khartoum Afifi Abdel Wahab paid a visit to Al-Fashir, the capital city of North Darfur. Abdel Wahab met with the city governor who called for dispatching scholars from Al-Azhar to Darfur, the source said, adding that the Egyptian Foreign Ministry is considering this subject with Al-Azhar.
A delegation from the Arab League is currently in the United Nations in an attempt to persuade the UN Security Council to freeze any decision against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for a year. Such a decision would have negative repercussions on the peace process in Darfur. In addition, it may affect the implementation of the comprehensive Peace Agreement between the North and the South, the source added.
