Here is the new U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama assuming his duties in the White House, and here we are waiting for him to solve all the political, economic, social and perhaps even emotional problems of the world. Those who have lovesickness problems need not send to the specialized sections in newspapers for advice, or go to a psychiatrist, now that Barack Obama has become President of the United States.
After all, if he will be able to solve the economic problem that befell the whole world due to the Bush administration, would the problem of a young man whose girlfriend has left him be too difficult for him? A political analyst told me that the Middle East problem that has been going for more than 60 years without a solution has finally found the man who will solve it, and that we Arabs can now go to sleep because Barack Hussein Obama came to the White House. He said Obama would only do so if he found a strong united Arab position, otherwise he would do like his predecessors who continued to support the successive Israeli governments. Even the Israeli newspaper Haaretz criticized that blind American support which does not seek a settlement to the problem as much as it tries to win the Jewish votes in the elections. All what my friend, the political analyst, said is true but painful. What hurts the most is that the United States takes such positions without at the same time risking its interests in the Arab States, which are much more than its interests in Israel. Thus, the United States preserves its interests on both sides. The American foreign policy in the Middle East under President Bush has achieved an additional advantage, namely absolving the U.S. of any move to bring about a settlement in the region, giving Israel full freedom to do as it wishes. And if the international community criticized any Israeli brutal act, the United States stood ready with its VETO. “Yes, this is the bare truth,” I said to my friend. “But who said we Arabs want the truth, especially if it was naked? It was said that one day the truth walked naked in the street and almost got raped. So she went home, got disguised with some clothes and went down again to find everybody respecting her. Why do you want us to wake from this dream?” “So that it would not turn into a nightmare,” he said. I said: “The nightmare is that ugly truth you are speaking of and those impossible efforts that you call on us, such as uniting the Arabs in a strong and clear position. Why do so if we have Obama the Savior to solve things for us?”
