The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) declared it filed a complaint against Saudi Arabia to the UN International Council on Human Rights. The EOHR accused Saudi authorities of insisting on whipping two Egyptian doctors, something it defines illegal. The EOHR also affirmed that the doctors' parents entrusted it with internationalizing this issue. The Saudi judiciary condemned the doctors to 15 and 20 years in prison respectively and to 1,500 lashes, 70 every ten days. EOHR Chairman Naguib Gabriel said such a sentence was a form of torture, describing it as a crime. In a statement issued yesterday, Gabriel says the EOHR has decided to hold an emergency meeting and file a complaint to the International Council on Human Rights. He accuses Saudi Arabia of covering up the torture of the two doctors Raouf Mohamed el-Arabi and Shawki Abderabbu, saying that the toughest sanction for the crime they are charged with, according to Sharia, is between 80 and 100 lashes. Gabriel stresses that through their silence regarding this issue, Saudi authorities are involved in this crime as well, as he describes it. He then adds that Saudi Arabia is a UN member and has to abide by the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and prevent human rights violations.
