When the Work Atmosphere Becomes Childish
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 03 - 07 - 2009

The work atmosphere becomes CHILDISH when it turns into a dirty game messing with people's feelings and interests, where some people get persecuted and harassed by others.
When walk into your boss's office to ask about an important matter, and find her legs prompt onto of the desk pretending like she is rubbing them with cream.
When your co-workers surround you making fun of you and sneering at you in an indecent way, then you turn, by the mighty power of God, from a supposedly-respectable employee to a clown or a slave, or even a jest!
You may work with a jackass manager who has a high ego, then he does not allow you to get the valuable information so that you would freak and collapse like a rat in the snare! Or, if you have a coward colleague, who panics from any discussion or criticism, then, all troubles come your way and tangle on you like hunting nets.
At the end of the corridor, the silly guy is standing harassing everybody with his unpleasant jokes which are as obnoxious as he is, and his shallow laugh which sounds like a weasel's in a dark night.
Despite the international economic crisis and the world panics about the flu diseases and hardships of life, some discreet employees and managers are behaving weirdly, acting irresponsibly as if they were children, or they might be so.
One's behavior should be suitable to the work environment where they are, regardless of the nature of that environment, their behavior, in any case, should be conducted by conscience and morals.
Our ideas and our acts are connected with our behaviors in our homes since we were little kids until now. We might not be aware of that, but it seems that the everyday pressure of life's ups and downs forces us to retreat and live beyond time and place. So, we go back to the old days and live the way we used to be, when we were children.  Then we kick each other, push each other, conspire against each other and do all those child behaviors.
That jobless guy, standing by the cooler, is playing with the white plastic cups, sending stupid jokes into the air.  Whereas the passers evade him, either by ignoring him or by hidden cursing, but sometimes they curse him in public when they become fed up with his idiot behavior.
This poor guy might have come from a troubled family; they might have a diseased father who is dying. So the guy is escaping from the ideas of death, loss and disease, trying to make it up through being silly and shallow in speech and act.
This is a kind of psychological defensive way, with which he tries to defend himself against his tough domineering feeling. Simply this guy has had enough of toughness, he does not need any responsibility or seriousness at work, he does not like to be criticized or blamed, and he simply wants nothing.
If your manager becomes your instructor, which is his role, suddenly he sounds like your father, so your reactions respond to this very quickly. But with stress and less sleep, things exacerbate and reach the peak, then you crack under all sorts of irritating work requirements and the manager's non-stopping demands.
Therefore, you make mistakes and continue making mistakes, and as such, you refuse to be corrected which gives you a feeling of suppression, depression, and unfairness. This way, in five minutes, you become the twenty first century's victim.
There are 13 types of personality in any work environment; the domineering personality is the most avoided one. But there is also the clown, the martyr and the rebellious.
In order to know how to deal with them, you should, first, understand each one of them and their motivations. They all should see a psychiatrist to help them specifying and get rid of their childhood complexes.
We should face the hidden devil inside each one of us. We all know unreasonable chairmen of boards and general managers who are successful in their careers, not because of their conduct or behavior, but because of their experience and discretion.
Think about it, try not to bring the child behavior complexes to the work place, as people have had enough of it; they should not be part of this.  Try to be a source of discipline for yourself and for others as well.
Do not let yourself fall in others' complexes, no matter how big or what position they are. Keep your integrity of character and dignity. Keep away from the riffraff.
Be fully self-confident, but do not exceed the limits, keep your balance of personality.
Do not hesitate to leave your CHILDISH work environment for another manly one, where you can work in peace and composure.
