The U.S. Department of State called on the government of South Africa to arrest Sudanese President, Omar Al Bashir, in implementation of the International Criminal Court (ICC) decision to designate him as war criminal, according to their official website on Sunday. In a press release, the U.S. Department of State expressed its "deep concern" by Bashir's travel to South Africa for the African Union summit, since he has been indicted by ICC on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide, and warrants for his arrest remain outstanding. "In light of the atrocities in Darfur, we call on the Government of South Africa to support the international community's efforts to provide justice for the victims of these heinous crimes," the statement read. "While the United States is not a party to the Rome Statute, which sets out the crimes falling within the jurisdiction of the ICC, we strongly support international efforts to hold accountable those responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes," Department of State Spokesperson, John Kirby stated Sunday.
