The insurgency in Sinai reached its peak in 2014, following the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Sinai-based jihadist group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for the frequent attacks on security forces, a state of emergency was declared on October 24th after 31 soldiers were killed in an attack on Karm Alkwadis checkpoint in Sheikh Zuweid. January 24: Jihadists shot down a fighter jet in Sheikh Zuweid, killing six military personnel. February 16: A suicide bombing targeted a travel bus carrying South Korean tourists in Taba, south Sinai, killing three tourists and injuring 15 others. After the bombing, gunmen opened fire on army troops in Arish, killing three soldiers. May: A suicide bombing targeting a police checkpoint, left two dead and five injured. A second bomb targeted a tourist bus near Sharm El-Sheikh, killing one and injuring four. Two policemen were killed and 15 others wounded in a latter attack. Eleven people, including seven security officers, were injured in a bomb attack on security vehicle in Al-Arish by unknown assailants on a motorbike. June 28: 4 soldiers were killed in a gunfire exchange with armed militants at a security checkpoint in Rafah in the so-called "Third Massacre of Rafah". August: Six soldiers were injured after an explosion in a bus traveling to Rafah. Two young citizens were killed in Arish by unidentified militants days later. Ansar Beit al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for killing four civilians in North Sinai, over accusations of treason and aiding army. September 2: A terrorist attack on a police convoy in Arish left 11 policemen dead and 2 injured. September 16: An officer and five soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb explosion targeting their police patrol. October 18: three soldiers were killed and seven others wounded in a bomb explosion targeting their bus on the way to North Sinai. December 23: the main gas pipeline South of Arish was bombed for the 27th time.
