Soccer on the side: More Swiss entrants
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 20 - 08 - 2013

Another Egyptian youngster in the form of Mahmoud Abdel-Moneim Kahraba joined his fellow Egyptian players Mohamed Salah and Al-Nenni in the Swiss league as he officially signed for Luzern. Kahraba who starred at the recently played U20 World Cup, indicated that everything concerning his transfer to Luzern from Enppi was finalised and that he already received his international ID which makes him eligible to play for his new team. Kahraba's first game in the league will come against Salah and Al-Nenni on 24 August. “I can't wait to get going with my new team especially that my first game in the league will be against my close friends Salah and Al-Nenni.” Egyptian fans will surely be hoping that Kahraba can have the same success his fellow Egyptians are having in the Swiss league.
Still in Switzerland, Mohamed Salah and Al-Nenni's absence almost allowed Basel to be defeated by Old Boys in first round of the Cup. Murat Yakin decided to rest several of his key players for this cup clash which nearly cost his side as they looked awful for most of the game and failed to score in the 90 minutes and only an extra time goal through Ivanov booked a ticket for Basel in the second round of the cup. Basel's next game in the league will be against Kahraba's new team Luzern.
In Belgium, Lierse simply can't find a way to stop their dismal start to the campaign as they suffered yet another defeat, this time a dramatic one. Lierse faced Gent away from home this week and managed to take an early lead when Losada scored in the third minute. The early goal gave the team confidence as they played a very good game with Hossam Ghali in specific looking very impressive with some brilliant passing. The heartbreaking defeat arrived in the last two minutes as Lierse somehow managed to concede two goals in the 92nd and 95th minutes. Gent, which did not offer a performance worthy of even a point made Lierse pay for their late lapse as it got away with all three points in shocking fashion. Ghali played a magnificent game and did not deserve to be in the losing side by any means while Ahmed Samir Farag had a decent game and managed to test the keeper a couple of times. The defeat leaves Lierse with just one point from five games.
Ahmed Al-Mohamadi started his second spell in the Premier League with an expected away defeat at the hands of Mourinho's Chelsea. The game ended in a 2-0 defeat for Hull City as Chelsea controlled the game from start to finish and could have added more goals on several occasions. Although Hull City were second best in the game, Al-Mohamadi can be extremely satisfied with his personal performance. He did not seem terrified at all given that his first taste of Premier League football in two years came against England's best left back in history, Ashley Cole. The Egyptian full back/winger played with huge confidence and it was his wonderful crosses that caused havoc over and over in Chelsea's penalty area throughout the 90 minutes. Defensively, Al-Mohamadi did not give Cole any space to attack him while he suffered a bit with man of the match Eden Hazard. On another day, Al-Mohamadi could have gone home with two or three assists if Graham and Davies managed to score from close range headers. The English commentator of the game chose Al-Mohamadi as Hull City's best player on the day and added that Al-Mohamadi gave Cole a very tough day which can be considered the best compliment the Egyptian can get. Goal.com gave Al-Mohamadi 3.5 out of 5 and these were the words written about him on its website: “Perhaps Hull's best player on the ball. He was never flustered, rarely conceded possession and got forward well too, sending in a handful of dangerous crosses. Struggled to contain the lively Hazard initially, but rose to the challenge as the match wore on”. Hull City's next game in the league will be against Norwich City at home where they will look to bounce back.
Still in England, Adam Al-Abd's Brighton finally managed to collect points in their new season as they defeated Birmingham 1-0 away from home to head home with the full three points. In their previous two games, Brighton were beaten by Leeds United and Derby County by the same score 2-1. Unfortunately, Al-Abd failed to see action yet again whether in the starting line up or as a substitute. After being a regular starter for Brighton in recent seasons, Al-Abd lost his place in the starting 11 in the middle of last season and didn't start a single game in the league since then which is making it difficult for him to get back his place. A change of managers didn't change Al-Abd's situation as he continues to start games on the bench waiting for a chance. Back to his team, Brighton's manager Oscar Garcia will surely be delighted that his team managed to win the first game of the season after a disastrous start where they suffered two defeats. Brighton moved up to 16th place after that win and their next game will be at home against Burnley.
Ahmed Hassan Kouka started his new campaign with Rio Ave in astonishing fashion even though he failed to find the back of the net. Rio Ave managed to defeat Belenenses 3-0 away from home much to the delight of the travelling fans. Hassan had an excellent game overall and managed to threaten the goal on several occasions and linked up well with the midfielders. Kouka surely hoped to open his account for the new season in their first game but no doubt he's as delighted that his team started in such emphatic fashion. Rio Ave has put their full trust in Kouka as he was given the number 9 shirt this season instead of last season's number 18 which shows he's their main man up front after flourishing last season.
Ahmed Hegazi and Fiorentina suffered their first defeat of preseason when they lost to Portugal giants Sporting Lisbon 3-0. After playing some easy games against poor teams in their preseason, this was the first real test for Fiorentina and unfortunately they failed badly. Hegazi played only the first half as we got used to in all previous games. He and his fellow starters all left the pitch at half-time when the score was 1-0. Hegazi managed to find the back of the net in those 45 minutes but the goal was rightly ruled offside as the Egyptian defender was inches ahead of the last defender. Apart from that, Hegazi had a very good first half, showed real fighting spirit and battled hard against a very organised side. The game was Fiorentina's last preseason game as they will now prepare themselves for their first official game of the campaign against Grasshopper in a Europa League qualifier on 22 August. Hegazi will be hoping he convinced Montella he's worth a starting place in the team this season.
Saleh Gomaa, the star of the U20 national team who had a trial with Dortmund two months ago and was set to join German team Furth after that, is wanted by Romanian club Vaslui. The Romanian club offered to take the young Egyptian magician on loan this season for 100k euros with an option to buy him for 900k if the player impressed that season. Gomaa's current club Enppi does not favour the move as they claim the player is much bigger than the Romanian league and that he should wait for a better chance to move abroad. The player himself rejected Furth as they play in the second division of the German league so it seems unlikely he would be interested in moving to the low profile Romanian league. It's only a matter of days before we know whether he'll accept the offer.
African and Arab players: In England, Swansea's Ivorian star and new signing Wilfried Bony scored his first goal in the league in the first game of the campaign when he came on at half time to score a consolation goal as they lost to English champions Manchester United 4-1.
Still in England, Guinea's captain Kamil El Zayatte scored a goal for Sheffield United as they drew 1-1 away from home against Leeds United away from home.
In Germany, Gabon's best player in history Aubameyang started his journey with Dortmund in emphatic fashion as he notched a hat-trick in their opening game of the season against Augsburg away from home.
In France, Tunisian star Saber Khelifa who starred for Evian last season and scored 13 goals in the league has signed for French giants Marseille. Khelifa lasted only two seasons with Evian but his brilliant performances last season paid off as Marseille managed to convince Evian to sell their star player.
In Russia, Cameroonian superstar Samuel Eto'o could be heading to London to sign for Chelsea to link up with his former coach Jose Mourinho after the whole squad of Anzhi was told they can look for another club to cut down the costs of the club. Reports indicate that if Mourinho fails to sign Wayne Rooney he'll move for his former star.
