Soccer on the side: Hull, Brighton want to shine under Premier lights
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 19 - 03 - 2013

Hull City and our Egyptian stars Ahmed Al-Mohamadi and Mohamed Nagi Gedo played two games this week coming out with different outcomes. The first game ended in a 1-0 win for them at the expense of Burnley away from home. The goal scorer wasn't Egyptian this time but through Quinn just one minute after fans favourite Gedo left the pitch injured in the 65th minute. Even though he didn't find the back of the net, the Egyptian striker had a good game overall with his dangerous movement and eye for the goal.
On the other hand, Al-Mohamadi once again played the full game and shone on the right flank as always. The Egyptian star sent in several tempting crosses inside the box and threatened with his speed throughout the 90 minutes. Unfortunately Ahmed Fathi was an unused substitute in the game.
The second game didn't really go according to plan as Hull suffered a hugely surprising defeat at home at the hands of the once European giants Nottingham Forest 2-1. Both Al-Mohamadi and Gedo played the full game with the former having an unlucky day in front of goal to fail in scoring at home for the first time since signing for the Tigers. Gedo had several chances to score but both the keeper and luck stood against him to deny him a goal at home. Newly married Al-Mohamadi was his usual self on the right flank as he caused plenty of problems for the opponents' full back but unfortunately he couldn't score or assist any goals.
Hull remained in second place as their main rivals for that place, Watford, lost against Mido's former team Barnsley.
Elsewhere in England, Adam Al-Abd's Brighton faced promotion chasers Crystal Palace this week at home. The game ended in an astonishing 3-0 win for Al-Abd's team. Al-Abd missed the game through suspension as he received his fifth yellow card against Barnsley. Even though the evergreen Egyptian was absent, once again Brighton's defence was outstanding as Al-Abd's fellow defenders secured their fourth clean sheet in six games. If Brighton can just maintain their current form they can surely secure a place in the top six to take part in the playoffs for promotion.
The first two teams in the championship are promoted automatically without taking part in the playoffs while teams from third to sixth play two semi-finals and a final to come out with one winner who will join the first two teams in the English Premier League next season. As it stands, Hull City will be promoted without playoffs while Brighton will have to overcome Leicester City who occupy sixth place at the moment but just on goal difference. Egyptian fans will definitely be praying for a double promotion for our Egyptian stars at Hull City and Brighton.
Off to the Swiss league, Mohamed Salah and Al-Nenni came off the bench to help Basel beat Thon by a single goal that came through the league's top scorer Streller in the 83rd minute, scoring an absolutely magnificent goal. Basel's head coach Yakin preferred to start the game without our two young Egyptian stars but both came off the bench as they were chasing a win that came late in the game. Salah came on in the 64th minute and played well as he came close to scoring when he struck the post in the last minute of the game. Fellow Egyptian Al-Nenni came on as soon as his team scored their only goal of the game to control the midfield which he did quite well in his short time on the pitch. The win took Basel to the summit of the league table on goal difference for the first time in 18 weeks as league leaders Grasshopper drew their game against Luzern.
In Belgium, Lierse played their final game of the season against Belgian giants Club Brugge and suffered a heavy defeat 3-0 away from home. Hani Ramzi started the game with three Egyptian stars in the form of Ahmed Said Okka, Ahmed Abu Mosalam and Mustafa Shebeta who came off in the 58th minute while the other two played the full game. The game was a one-sided tie with both teams having nothing to play for in the game as Club Brugge would have already finished the season in fourth place regardless of the outcome of their final game, while Lierse managed to avoid relegation in their previous game when they defeated Kortrijk by a single goal.
In the UAE, Abu Treika was missed once again as Banni Yas crashed to a defeat in the cup at the hands of Ittihad Kalba 2-1. It is obvious that Treika's absence is hindering Banni Yas' progress in all competitions as they badly lack his creativity in the final third which was echoed by the team's coach Chovanec after their latest defeat. Reports indicate that Treika could be back the next game but only time will tell whether he'll make it or miss out yet again.
In Italy, Ahmed Hegazi's Fiorentina played an extremely thrilling game as they hosted Genoa. The game ended in a 3-2 win for Hegazi's Fiorentina as they snatched their fourth win in the last five games. Once again Hegazi was missing as he just started light training this week in his bid to recover from the nasty knee injury he suffered in training several months ago. The win took the Viola, as they call them in Italy, to the fourth place.
Arab and African: In England, Ivorian star Gervinho scored Arsenal's second goal as they defeated Swansea 2-0 away from home.
Still in England, another Ivorian star in the form of Arouna Kone scored a vital winner for Wigan as they defeated Newcastle in the final minute via the Ivorian's strike.
In France, Tunisian player Wahbi Khazri scored a goal for Bastia as they stunned Lyon by winning the game 4-1 in what was definitely the upset of weekend.
Still in France, Evian managed to beat Lille 2-1 away from home with all goals scored through African stars with Ivorian mega star Salomon Kalou scoring at both ends, first for his team and later in the game scoring Evian's winning goal with Tunisian star Saber Khelifa scoring their first goal.
