Soccer on the side: Two Egyptian superstars leave UAE, one arrives
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 12 - 02 - 2013

This week we had an all-Egyptian game in the English Championship as Adam Al-Abd's Brighton hosted promotion chasing Hull City and its three Egyptian stars Ahmed Al-Mohamadi, Ahmed Fathi and Mohamed Nagi Gedo. This was the first game for Hull City's new arrivals Fathi and Gedo with their new team. Al-Mohamadi played the full game yet again while Steve Bruce opted to start with Gedo on the bench though Fathi wasn't selected for the game. Al-Abd and his team managed to defeat the Tigers by a single goal that came in the 82nd minute through the one-time Spanish sensation Vicente. Al-Abd played a magnificent game in defence as he and his teammates managed to keep a clean sheet against a very strong Hull City side. On the other hand, Al-Mohamadi played a very good game once more and came close to scoring four minutes before the hosts scored as he received the ball inside the box and sent a powerful shot towards the far corner but the keeper somehow managed to get a crucial touch to it to prevent the flying winger from scoring his second league goal this season. New arrival Gedo came on in the 70th minute to make his debut as his side was looking for all three points at that time. Unfortunately he didn't get any real chances to find the back of the net and barely touched the ball in his 20-minute cameo as the hosts controlled the later stages of the game. The win took Brighton to seventh place while Hull City drops to fourth in the league table.
Still in England, Mido' Barnsley managed to defeat Middlesbrough 3-2 away from home as they continued their incredible run of form as they won their fourth game in a row. Mido was once again absent from the squad and he'll certainly leave at the end of season as agreed with the club . The win takes them to 22nd place.
In Belgium, Hani Ramzi's Lierse travelled to face a struggling Charleroi side that lost four games in a row prior to this game. On the other hand, Lierse lost two and drew one in the last three games prior to the match so it was a clash between two strugglers. Mohamed Al-Gabbas and Ashour Al Takki both started the game as supporting strikers behind Hazurov. The game ended in a 1-0 defeat for Lierse as they could not take advantage of the very weak ad slow defence of the opponents. Both Al-Gabbas and Al Takki showed some good touches and fought hard throughout their time on the pitch but could not get any real chances to score. Al Takki was replaced in the 48th minute while Al-Gabbas was replaced in the 65th minute but unfortunately Lierse could not find an equaliser as they stayed 14th in the league after the defeat.
In Italy, Ahmed Hegazi's Fiorentina faced Italian Champions Juventus away from home this weekend. The game ended in an expected 2-0 defeat for the Viola as Juve dominated the game from start to finish. Hegazi is yet to recover from his horrific knee injury so he watched the game from the stands as they stayed sixth after the defeat.
In the UAE, unfortunately and as expected Banni Yas announced that Mohamed Abu Treika's arrival at the club came at the expense of Mohamed Zidan. In the past two weeks, reports from the UAE indicated that Abu Treika will sign for Banni Yas in place of fellow Egyptian star Zidan due to the perceived lack of appreciation for his club, Banni Yas vice-chairman Mubarak Bin Mahroum told CNN Arabic. The club released the following statement regarding the release of the former Dortmund star: “Zidan missed a lot of matches after claiming to be injured on several occasions. We had to drop Zidan because he has been absent many times for reasons that we are not sure about, even though he has always been paid on time and we think Zidan has not been caring about Banni Yas like the club has been to him.”
On the other hand Abu Treika's first game at his new club came in the President's Cup quarter-final against Al Ein away from home. As we've been used to from the Egyptian legend Abu Treika had a tremendous game and scored a stunner which unfortunately was not enough as his team slipped to a 2-1 defeat to bow out of the cup. Treika showed his undoubted class in his first game with his new club as he scored a wonder goal with a magnificent shot from outside the box to level the scores in addition to supplying his teammates with numerous key passes during the game. Abu Treika will be disappointed his team could not find that vital second goal as Banni Yas' defence went missing at the end of the game which resulted in them conceding a late goal that sealed the win for Al Ein.
Still in the UAE, Shikabala was the other Egyptian superstar released by his team El Wasl for nearly the same reasons that ended Zidan's spell in the UAE. El Wasl announced three days ago that they signed Brazilian attacker Ferrera in place of the Egyptian star. In addition to his long-term absence due to injury, the club recently clashed with Shika as he travelled to Cairo without permission and switched off his cell phone which all but ended Shika's time in the UAE. All of a sudden two Egyptian magicians left the UAE and another Egyptian legend in the form of Abu Treika appeared.
In Switzerland, Egyptian stars at Basel had a great day at office as they defeated Essam Al-Hadari's former club FC Sion in their first game of the second part of the season 3-0 with Mohamed Salah scoring the second goal for his team and Al-Nenni appearing for the first time. Both Egyptians started the game on the bench as Salah came on at half time while Al-Nenni came on in the 76th minute. Basel lacked creativity in the first half and barely threatened the opponents' goal until they took the lead in the last minute of the first half through Streller. Salah came on at half time to add energy to his team and made an immediate impact as he scored his side's second goal in the 51st minute as he rounded the keeper to slot home after receiving the ball inside the box. In the 76th minute Al-Nenni came on to make his debut for his new team. He had a tough task in his first game as he came up against Italian legend Gennaro Gattuso but the young Egyptian stood firm and had a very comfortable game in his short cameo. Basel stayed second in the league after that win.
