Soccer on the side: Salah's African talent award historic
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 01 - 01 - 2013

Our young Egyptian maestro Mohamed Salah made the whole country proud after being named Africa's most promising talent of the year 2012 by the African football federation CAF. Salah clinched the award at the expense of Senegalese star Moussa Konate who starred at the Olympics last summer, and Celtic's Kenyan star Wanyama who's playing some fantastic football for Celtic at the moment. Salah's achievement can be considered one of the greatest in the history of Egyptian football. Let's hope Salah keeps up his exceptional performances with Egypt and Switzerland's Basel in the future so that he can fulfill his potential.
Ahmed Mohamadi's Hull City continued their incredible form as they defeated a very well organised Derby County away from home 2-1. Once again Mohamadi played a very good game without being involved directly in the goals scored. Playing week in week out obviously raised Mohamadi's game as he showed all season with his new team as he once again starred in this encounter thanks to his superb crosses. The fourth consecutive win takes Hull City to second in the league only three points behind leaders Cardiff.
Still in England, Adam Al-Abd wasn't involved this week as Brighton's game against Blackburn was postponed indefinitely due to heavy rains at Ewood Park. At the same time Mido wasn't involved in Barnsley's game against Millwall as they registered their first win in a very long time. Mido was absent as he is yet to recover from a groin injury. Moreover, it seems that Mido's time in England will soon come to an end as his coach publicly questioned the player's physical condition and whether he can still make the grade in England due to his endless number of injuries plus being visibly overweight. Only time will tell if Mido will still play any part for his new club this season.
Off to Belgium, Mohamed Al-Gabbas finally scored for Lierse as they were denied an away victory against OH Leuven. The game which ended in a 2-2 draw saw Al-Gabbas score the second goal for his team from the penalty spot before Leuven snatched the equaliser 10 minutes from time. Ahmed Said Okka played the full game and was in fine form but couldn't prevent the opponents from scoring their two goals. The draw means Lierse stay 15th in the league.
In Turkey, Amr Zaki's Elazigspor suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Sivasspor away from home. Zaki wasn't selected for the match squad for tactical reasons and off the field problems as he returned late from Egypt after a short vacation. Elazigspor's first defeat in three games meant they stayed in the drop zone in 16th place.
In the UAE, both Zizou and Shikabala didn't see action in the President's Cup this week as they were injured in their head-to-head clash last week. Zizou suffered a slight knee injury that will rule him out for three weeks while Shikabala missed the game due to a groin injury that will rule him out for 10 days. In the absence of Zidan, Banni Yas managed to beat Dubai by two goals to nothing while Shikabala's Al-Wasl lost to Dibba Al-Fujirrah by 2-1 to bow out of the cup.
African and Arab: In France, Evian's Tunisian star Saber Khelfia scored a consolation goal in his side's defeat to Valenciennes. The game ended 2-1 to the hosts.
Marseille's Ghanaian rising star Andre Ayew scored the only goal of the game as they defeated Saint Etienne at home.
In England, Newcastle's Nigerian star Shola Ameobi scored the only goal of the game as they defeated Adel Taarabt's QPR at home. Moroccan star Adel Taarabt was in great form despite the defeat.
Everton's Nigerian Star Victor Anichebe scored the first goal for his team as they defeated West Ham 2-1 in London.
Recently crowned best African player of the year Yaya Toure played the full game as Man City defeated Reading 1-0 at home.
In the English Championship, Mohamadi's teammate Abdullah Faye scored the winning goal for Hull as they defeated Derby County 2-1 away from home.
In Germany, Senegalese star Mama Diouf scored Hannover's only goal of the game as they lost to Dusseldorf 2-1 away from home.
