Soccer on the side: Egypt's Ferrari Salah in fourth gear
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 09 - 04 - 2013

Hull City and its three Egyptian stars took another step closer to the Premier League this weekend as they defeated Middleborough by a single goal at home. All of the stars featured in the game with Ahmed Al-Mohamadi completing the game as usual while Gedo started the match in the starting XI and came off in the 54th minute and Ahmed Fathi coming on in the 80th minute.
Unfortunately, Gedo's mini drought in front of goal continued this week as the Egyptian striker could not manage to find the back of the net due to the lack of service and lack of real chances in the game in general. However, Gedo did have a good day at the office in terms of holding the ball and linking up with his teammates. As for Al-Mohamadi the Egyptian winger had a very good game yet again on the right flank as he gave the full back a torrid time throughout the 90 minutes thanks to his frightening speed and dangerous crosses. Fathi came on for the last 10 minutes as Steve Bruce wanted to play it safe at the back so he threw more bodies to defend the lead, including our Egyptian warrior. Hull City stayed second after that the win, three points clear of third place Watford who drew against league leaders Cardiff City.
The first two teams in the championship are promoted automatically without taking part in the playoffs while teams from third to sixth play two semi-finals and a final to come out with one winner who will join the first two teams in the English Premier League next season.
Adam Al-Abd's Brighton managed to salvage a priceless point as they came from behind to score a very late equaliser against Leicester City at home. Seventh in the league Leicester City were set to overtake Brighton's place in the league but thanks to a late strike from Lua Lua Brighton managed to stay in sixth place to hold on to their place in the promotion playoffs. Our Egyptian star Al-Abd's was back from suspension this weekend but could only find a place on the bench as the manager decided to play with the same team that played the previous week. As the team enters a crucial part of the season, Al-Abd will no doubt be aiming to get back in the starting XI in the coming weeks.
Mohamed Salah and Basel had a week to remember as they played two games in seven days. First they faced Luzern away from home and won 4-0 with the Egyptian Ferrari Salah finding the back of the net for the first time in two month when he scored his side's third goal in the game to seal the win. In addition to the goal Salah played a part in two other goals and had a brilliant game in general as he tormented the opponents' defence. Al-Nenni came on in the 73rd minute and looked very impressive in the middle of the park in his short cameo.
Against Luzern, Salah was just warming up for the big game against Tottenham Spurs in London three days later. Basel and Salah played one of their biggest games of the season against the English giants and Salah in particular was by far man of the match. The game ended in a 2-2 draw and although Basel were leading 2-0 in the first 35 minutes, they can still consider the result a good one given the superiority of their opponents led by the unbelievable talents of Gareth Bale. Salah played his best game of the season as he completely tortured the evergreen Vertonghen throughout the game using his lightning speed and brilliant tricks.
In addition to the man of the match display Salah managed to play a huge part in his side's first goal which was scored by Stocker after some great work from Salah and Streller. Salah was replaced in the final minute of the game and received a standing ovation from the travelling fans after his outstaying showing. Al-Nenni played the full game as well after impressing against Luzern and was even more impressive against Spurs as he dominated the middle of the park against the English international Scott Parker. After the game Spurs' goalkeeper Brad Friedel indicated that Salah caused his side plenty of problems in the game and that he'll definitely be the one to watch for Basel in the second game.
In Italy, Ahmed Hegazi's Fiorentina managed to come from two goal down to snatch a priceless draw against AC Milan at home. The Viola had to do it with just 10 players after the sending off of Tomovic. Hegazi was still out as he's yet to recover from his dreadful knee injury suffered in training five months ago. The draw meant Fiorentina stayed fourth in the table behind AC Milan.
In Portugal, Ahmed Hassan or Kouka had an extremely mixed afternoon in his side's game against Vitoria Setubal which ended in a 2-1 for Kouka's Rio Ave. Kouka managed to score the equaliser for side in the 10th minute after conceding a goal in the first two minutes but at the other end he received a straight red card in the 61st minute for a clumsy challenge. The red card was the second for Kouka this season after receiving his first against Braga earlier in the season. Kouka will have to thank his teammates, as they managed to hold on for the win and the three points to end a run of three consecutive losses. The win took Rio Ave to eighth place.
In the UAE, Mohamed Abu Treika was the difference for Banni Yas once again as he scored the only goal of the game as they defeated El Shabab at home. The goal came in the last minute of the first half as Abu Treika slotted home from close range after a mistake from the defender who failed to clear the ball after a cross from the left flank. The game was a bit dull as both teams seemed off form but the Egyptian legend Abu Treika was there to snatch the winner for his team. The win took Banni Yas to second place behind league leaders Al Ein.
Arab and African: Newcastle's Senegalese star Papiss Cisse scored in the last minute as Newcastle defeated Fulham 1-0 at home.
Ivorian star Gervinho assisted the first goal for Arsenal as they defeated West Brom 2-1 away from home.
Togolese captain Emanuel Adebayor scored the first goal for Tottenham as they drew 2-2 with Everton at home.
Ghanaian str Wakaso Mubarak scored the first goal for Espanyol as they defeated Osasuna 2-0 away from home.
In France, Soluymane Camara and Younes Belhanda were both on target as Montpellier defeated Valencienenes 3-1 at home.
