Soccer on the side: First time two Egyptians score in one game in England
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 19 - 02 - 2013

Last week, Mohamed Nagi Gedo made his debut with Hull City as a second half substitute against Adam Al-Abd's Brighton. Since then, Gedo has been absolutely on fire as he scored two goals in two games for his new team.
In the first game Hull City faced Derby County at home and won 2-1. The marvelous thing about that win was that it was a win for the Egyptian nation and the Egyptians. Gedo came on at half time as it was 0-0 and opened his account for Hull City with a magnificent header with his first touch of the game. Derby County scored an equaliser in the 85th minute and it looked like Gedo's first goal for his new club would only earn them one point. The already fans favorite Ahmed Al-Mohamedi had another say as he scored the winner with another terrific header in the 88th minute as the fans went crazy inside KC Stadium.
It was the first time ever two Egyptians score in one game in England which made the win so special to Egyptian fans and not just Hull City.
That was not it for Gedo as he started the following game for his team as they faced Charlton Athletic. Our Egyptian star scored the only goal of the game to earn his team all three points as the fans sang his name throughout the 90 minutes.
Gedo's goal came in the 33rd minute as he slotted home when the ball bounced in front of him inside the six yards after a mistake from the keeper.
Moreover, Ahmed Fathi came on in the 53rd minute and played as a right back and had a very good game on his debut as well. After the game, manager Steve Bruce could not hide his delight with Gedo's second goal in as many games and paid tribute to the chairman who worked hard to bring an exceptional striker in the form of Gedo to the club. Bruce added that if his new Egyptian stars Fathi and Gedo managed to settle quickly and play their normal game his team will definitely be in the Premier League next season as he counts on them heavily to push the team forward all the way to the end. No doubt Egyptian fans will be praying for the same thing as it will be unbelievable to have three Egyptian stars playing in the same team in the Premiership. The two wins meant Hull City stayed second in the league behind Cardiff City.
Mido's time in England is finally over as he left Barnsley by mutual consent after a long time of negotiations with the club. Mido's next step in not clear yet as declared on Twitter that he's considering a player/coach deal at an unnamed club in Asia. Mido is free to join any club he wants as he's a free agent at the moment.
Still in England, unlike his fellow Egyptians, Al-And played only one game this week as Brighton faced Blackburn Rovers and drew 1-1 at home. Al-And played the full game and had a very good day at the office as he managed to minimise the threat of the opponents' strikers during the 90 minutes. The draw took Brighton one place up to seventh in the league table.
In Belgium, Lierse continued their awful run of form as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at home at the hands of Mechelen. Mohamed Dodi Al-Gabbas was the only Egyptian to take part in the defeat as he started the game and came off in the 70th minute right after the opponents scored their second goal. Hani Ramzi's situation at the club is becoming more and more uncertain as he declared he wants to leave and will discuss the matter with the chairman in the near future. The latest defeat meant Lierse stayed in 15th place just one place above the bottom.
In Italy, Ahmed Hegazi's Fiorentina destroyed Italian giants Inter Milan 4-1 in a one-sided game. Hegazi watched his team play some fantastic football led by their attacking due Jovetic and Ljajic as both of them scored braces. The win took Fiorentina to sixth place.
In Switzerland, Mohamed Salah played a big role as Basel defeated Lausanne Sport 2-1 away from home. Salah played the full game and earned his team a penalty kick in the 33rd minute from which they scored their opening goal. It wasn't a penalty by any means but Salah managed to deceive the referee to win his side the spot kick. In general Salah played a very good game and looked dangerous whenever he had the ball at his feet. However, Al-Nenni was an unused substitute this time around. The win ensured that Basel stayed second in the league table.
In the UAE, our Egyptian magician and maestro Mohamed Abu Treika continued his splendid form with his new team as he scored his second goal in as many games. Banni Yas defeated Dubai 5-0 with Treika scoring the fourth via a terrific free kick from outside the box. Apart from his goal, Treika looked as if he has been playing at Banni Yas for years as he tormented the opponents' defenders time and time again. The win meant Banni Yas stayed third in the league table after 15 games.
African and Arab: In Turkey, Didier Drogba scored on his debut as Galatasaray defeated Akhisar 2-1 away from home. Drogba scored the first goal with a superb header and assisted in the second.
In England, Nigerian forward Victor Anichebe scored the first goal as Oldham United held Everton to a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup.
Still in the FA Cup, Ivorian star Arouna Kone scored two goals as Wigan defeated Huddersfield 4-1 away from home.
In Spain, Ghanaian star Michael Essien played a magnificent game as Real Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano 2-0.
