One soldier was injured on Friday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a security post in Egypt's North Sinai, a security source has said, as an Islamist insurgency continues to take its toll. Yasser Mohamed, 20, was shot in the leg while on guard at a security outpost in the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zewaid, and has been rushed to the hospital, the source told state news agency MENA. The assailants, reportedly riding a vehicle, exchanged fire with security forces who later combed the area in search of suspects. Militant attacks targeting police and troops have been commonplace since the army's ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last summer amid massive protests against his year-long rule. Almost 500 people, mostly policemen and soldiers, have been killed in militant attacks, including bombings and shootings. In recent months, the violence has spread to Cairo and the surrounding Nile Delta region.
