Mourinho congratulates 'objective referee' following Chelsea defeat In sarcastic comments, Jose Mourinho says referee Mike Dean produced 'fantastic and objective performance' as Chelsea lose to Sunderland in the English Premier League
Chelsea's outspoken manager Jose Mourinho sarcastically congratulated referee Mike Dean and head of Premier League referees Mike Riley after his side slumped to a surprise 2-1 home defeat by Sunderland on Saturday. "Congratulations to Mike Dean and to Mike Riley. What they have done in the season is great for how the league has turned out," he said in televised comments following the match. "Those were Objective and fantastic performanceS, especially with teams who are involved in the title [race]." Chelsea took an early lead through Samuel Eto'o but Connor Wickham levelled the score shortly after on the rebound after Marcos Alonso's long-range effort was poorly saved by 41-year-old keeper Mark Schwarzer. Striker Fabio Borini converted a controversial penalty to put Sunderland ahead with nine minutes remaining, sparking a furious reaction from Mourinho and his assistants on the touchline. Jozy Altidore fell under an apparent challenge from Jozy Altidore but television replays showed there was no contact between both men. Mourinho was also embroiled in controversy last month when he confronted referee Chris Foy following Chelsea's defeat at Aston Villa.
