Ahly coach attributes win to ‘better luck' Mohamed Youssef says the luck factor played a key role in helping Ahly claim two successive wins in the Egyptian Premier League
Mohamed Youssef, whose Ahly job remains under scrutiny despite two consecutive Egyptian Premier League wins, attributed the team's recent fine run to “better luck”. Although the defending champions remain highly unconvincing, they pulled off two morale-boosting victories after crushing Maqassa 4-1 before defeating lowly club Ragaa 3-0 to move second in Group A of the league's new two-group format. They are three points behind leaders and surprise package Smouha and three ahead of Ittihad and Arab Contractors in the race to obtain one of the two tickets to a final mini-league phase. “Our spirit was always high but we just lacked luck during the past period,” Youssef, who steered Ahly to the African Champions League title last year shortly after replacing Hossam El-Badry, said on the club's official website. “When luck was on our side, we scored 7 goals in 180 minutes [against Maqassa and Ragaa].” Three second-half goals from in-form striker Amr Gamal, playmaker Abdallah El-Said and right-back Ahmed Fathi helped Ahly see off Raga despite finding it difficult to create any goal-scoring opportunities during a dull first half. Ahly, who have been struggling for creativity since last year's retirement of talismanic playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika, are hoping Burkinabe winger Moussa Yedan and El-Said would maintain their recent fine displays as they seek to unlock the tight backlines of modest opponents who prefer to sit back and snatch a draw. “We took full advantage of the pace of our forwards to score three goals against Ragaa,” Yousseef added. “We will play with the same high spirit and determination in the coming games to ensure that we would advance to the final round.” Ahly, Egypt's most successful clubs with 36 league titles under their belt, are chasing an eighth consecutive accolade.
